Cafe Liz

Located at 5437 N. Lawrence Street, Cafe Liz is set back only a block away from the hustle and bustle of North 5th Street. It’s humble exterior may not draw you right in, but if you know what’s good, you will definitely give this place a try.

The lower level of this Portuguese gem serves as a local bar where patrons often come to watch soccer, or more authentically, “fútbol” matches on the large projection screen which covers the entire wall. The upstairs is a beautiful sit down dining room area, complete with white linen table cloths. The menu offers many traditional Portuguese dishes including a wide variety of seafood selections. The entrees rang from $14.00 and up and are worth every delicious penny!

Call for Art: The Olney Cultural Collaborative Gallery Opening

The Olney Cultural Collaborative is currently seeking submissions
from local artists for its gallery opening (early 2011) which will
celebrate the newly renovated 5th Street Office (5738 N 5th St.),
redesigned to function as a centralized community space on the corridor.
Selected works will be featured in a gallery opening event and displayed
for the following three months. Please email pictures of your work along
with a short artist bio (3-5 sentences) to Olneyproject@gmail.com by
August 30th. We will consider all artistic mediums, as long as the
works can be easily mounted and hung on our walls. Feel free to
contact us with any questions or concerns (267-331-9091). We hope that
the gallery opening will highlight the local talent in our community
as well as kick off a wonderful second season of The Olney Cultural
Collaborative.

The focus will be on increasing flexibility, building strength and increasing stamina, and promoting a state of relaxationand rejuvenation. Beginners and the experienced are welcomed! Please come to class in comfortableclothing and bring your own mat or towel, a limited amount of extra mats will be provided.

Pictures from African Culture Day

On June 5th, The Olney Cultural Collaborative hosted an “African Culture Day” at the Olney Library. At the event, children learned about traditional African clothes and then dressed up in outfits provided by Fola from Fola’s African Fashions (5740 N 5th St):

Then, children and adults learned African dance, taught by Annsumane:

Finally, children used their new knowledge and experience of African cultures to create African art based on traditional symbols and patterns:
